The global environmental issues we face today are increasing. Our thirst for raw materials and food to feed the masses has grown so much that everything we do affects our environment.

The Problem…

Another environmental hazard that has been present for years and is now just emerging to challenge our resourcefulness, is poultry manure. The growing availability of poultry meats has consequently brought about this problem that needs to be contained for this industry to grow unabated.

Our poultry industry is growing with the five major contributor countries being China, India, Europe, Mexico and Brazil. Between them they produced 2.25 million metric tons of poultry meat in 2009.

As poultry meat is becoming a cheaper alternative to the red meats, this industry is going to grow, and as poultry can be grown a lot quicker than its red meat counterparts and with pork and beef not being accepted by some cultures, it seems only natural that producing and delivering more poultry meat faster than the red meats, is more acceptable, and importantly for industry, more financially viable.

Presently, the downside to this emerging industry is the waste produced by poultry, with each bird excreting between 100–150 grams per day mixed with bedding in the form of straw, sawdust and/or shavings.

With farms ranging from 10,000+ to 100,000+ birds, that equates to 1 to 10 ton of manure everyday 365 days of the year. Literally a mountain of manure.

Studies have shown in the past that poultry manure is one of the best natural forms of animal manure for our crops, but it does have a raw inhibiting side to it, which is why it has NOT been utilised on a grand scale.

The Hazards…

The hazardous side of this potential resource comes in several forms that we know of today;

- Microbes working on the ammonia in the manure turning it into nitrate which then leaches into the ground and into our water table which is bad for our health and environment.

- Raw poultry manure needs to breathe, so when ploughed into the ground or used as landfill, it tends to severely restrict the oxygen which in turn creates another harmful greenhouse gas called nitrous oxide.

- There are some harmful pathogens like salmonella and campylobacter associated with the untreated manure, and when applied directly to crops for human consumption this creates health problems.

- The high nitrogen content tends to burn the plants if applied incorrectly. Vigilance is always required so as not to damage the delicate stages of growth.
